E-cigarette Explosion Lawsuit Canada

On October 11, 2018, the Government of Canada reported  on  injuries stemming from vaping products, including e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes vaporize a liquid into a vapor or steam which is then inhaled. A concerning number of burn incidents have been documented due to the batteries in e-cigarettes exploding.

According to a 2015 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report, more than 9 million people in the United States use e-cigarettes. Reportedly, there has been over 200 fires and explosions and more than 130 injuries related to e-cigarettes in the U.S. since 2009. Injuries generally involve severe burns to the hands, legs, face, chest and lungs.

Though the exact cause of those incidents is still unclear, growing evidence traces most cases back to the battery. Typically, the devices are powered by a portable, rechargeable lithium-ion battery.

In Canada we have seen a growing number of incidents as well. In response, Health Canada provides tips on its website to prevent injuries from vaping devices (the responsibility for regulating e-cigarettes falls under the purview of provincial governments). However some argue that consumers are not receiving proper warnings as to the potential for explosions and their impact.

If you or your loved one has suffered an injury due to an e-cigarette explosion, you may be eligible for compensation for your injuries.
