As an update to our ongoing Allergen lawsuit, this week the company issued a global recall of the textured breast implants, the focus of our legal action.
Recall worldwide
The move came in response to a growing concern over reports linking the breast implants to a heightened risk of cancer. Health Canada had already banned the sale in Canada, as we mentioned in our last post.
According to a press release, the company issued this worldwide recall – of both its textured breast implants and tissue expanders – as a precautionary move following recent updates to global safety information.
Health risks
That information demonstrates a troubling link between textured implants and the development of BIA-ALCL, a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. “Importantly, the FDA and other health authorities have not recommended removal or replacement of textured breast implants or tissue expanders in asymptomatic patients,” the release added in bold.
It’s been estimated that 700 cases of BIA-ALCL, predominantly linked to textured implants, have been found globally. Health Canada has been notified of 28 confirmed Canadian cases of BIA-ALCL, of which 24 (86%) involve Allergan’s Biocell breast implant.
The specific textured breast implant products that have been recalled include Natrelle Saline-Filled breast implants, Natrelle Silicone-Filled breast implants, Natrelle Inspira Silicone-Filled breast implants, and Natrelle 410 Highly Cohesive Anatomically Shaped Silicone-Filled breast implants.
